Pinlock Review

GO FASTER GOODIE - Bolting on to ride quicker

THE PROBLEM It’s a perfect sunny day, the kind of day that vindicates your decision to spend too much time and money on a performance bike. Then that distant dark cloud becomes a downpour under your wheels and suddenly the inside of your visor is steamier than the latter stages of a stag night in Prague. And in winter you nearly black out from asphyxiation through trying to avoid breathing inside your visor. Anti-mist sprays need constant re-application and stick-on visor inserts can be a nightmare to fit. What now?

THE SOLUTION Fit a Pinlock visor insert. Racers love them and we do too. Essentially it’s double-glazing for visors. A plastic insert clips inside the visor on little posts and a silicon bead around the edge of the insert spaces it from the visor, forming a sealed air pocket. Purchasers of recent Arai and Shoei lids get the system as a stock fitment. But for £20, the cost of a thankful of petrol at summer 2008 prices, you can buy a DIY Pinlock kit for your AGV, Caberg, HJC, Nitro, Shark, Suomy, Takachi, and older Arais and Shoeis.

THE FITTING A no-brainer if your visor already has Pinlock posts. Just remember to remove the protective film before attempting to ride. No, really. I once forgot. Otherwise you’ll need to drill a couple of holes in your visor using the template supplied in the DIY kit. If this is beyond your capabilities-and please say it isn’t-then importer Crossan Motorcycles will do it for you for a fiver.

THE RESULT Your visor simply refuses to mist up. As in ever. Indeed you need never open it again, should you not want to. Tinted inserts are available to complement the standard clear one in light, dark and high-definition yellow (perfect for rainy days) at £15 each, so rather than carry a spare visor you need only take an insert with you.
